First rant in a loooong time

by phill

I sent this to one of my message friends on flork.com: I think I kind of mixed up science into it a bit too much. But meh, it’s my rant and I can jargon if I want to.

I don’t believe that religion in itself is the biggest problem with the world, far from it. Belief is something that comes inherent to a person’s interactions with the world around them. Religion has in some cases been the driving force for major scientific and philosophical breakthroughs in the way we view our world today. Newton was a DEEPLY religious man. And yet he believed in a set of rules that define our universe in a may such that predictions can be made about what the ‘hands of God’ set in motion. Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not a religious guy. I’ve had a taste of what it was like and decided that -organised- religion is not for me. And that’s my general view for the world. Religion only gets ugly when it is organised and power based. And when those power bases clash with another religious power base, it gets uglier by orders of magnitude.
Unfortunately it could be said that the centralisation of religion is a necessary thing. By reducing th enumber of ‘free agents’ in the world, you reduce the number of possible collisions that may occur between conflicting religions. It seems like is a necessary evil (not sure if that’s the righ tterm to use there, what with the topic being what it is). But that doesn’t mean to say that an everyday person is limited to being part of a centralised religion or being an atheist. You can believe what you want to believe, you can just try and live life as you see fit. Be a good person, be a bad person, it’s all up to you. That’s what I think anyway.

I left my lights on on my car today. Flat as a tack by the time I got back to my car. Which meant I had to run around in the rain getting very cold trying to find a public phone (I found one in the first place I looked, so that was cool). The RAC guy was damn quick though, which was cool. Never doing THAT again (again).
