I’ve got my philosophy

I’ve read four Terry Pratchett books in the last couple of weeks (Guards! Guards!, Reaper Man, Mort and Jingo for those interested) and they’re just as laugh-out-loud funny as I first found them. And poignant, in parts. I think that’s what I like the most about them – it’s this completely metaphorical sort of world, but as a result of this it is very able to be abrupt and honest in its telling. That and Terry Pratchett is, simply, a genuis genius.

I went to see Ben Folds at WASO with Lou last night. He still puts on one hell of a show – him and his little piano of awesomeness. There was an awkward moment before the show where I almost ran into a past acquaintence of mine – one that would have resulted in either a lot of nervous coughs or a sort of mutual silence – but that was quickly lost with the spectacle of the thing. And a set of stairs. Anywho, he played a lot of my favourites; Zak and Sara, Smoke, Philosophy, Not the Same, Ascent of Stan, Cigarette, Fred Jones Part 2, One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces, Brick, Rockin’ the Suburbs, Lullaby, One Down, The Luckiest and Narcolepsy to name the ones that I can remember. It was quite funny – there were a lot of people there that obviously had not actually heard a lot of his stuff. When he was explaining the ‘Part 2′ of Fred Jones he couldn’t say the sentence that he’d ripped Cigarette from, so he decided to play out the song on the piano (something he hadn’t done “for something like ten years”). When he got to the bit about ‘setting the house aflame’, a good proportion of the crowd laughed – “that’s the most honest reaction I’ve had about that one.” – when it’s kind of a gentle song, not meant to be funny at all, in my mind. Hardly anyone knew the crowd participation lines (the ‘Preparation H’ and ‘Fuck’ bits in Rockin’ the Suburbs) but that was okay because I made up for it in my row. Narcolepsy was fucking amazing – it already had strings in the original, but the arrangement for it, and all the songs for that matter, just made it insanely good. Though I wasn’t sure about the random opera singer coming in for a few lines. Kind of annoying. He also performed the ‘Perth Song’ that he made up presumably while he was here with the help of some people from the crowd holding up placards telling the orchestra what to do. That was hilarious ^^ But yeah, all up definitely worth it. Can’t wait for his next album :o

I’ve re-written a lot of my ‘Pistolancer’ story (worst title in the world, I know) and actually decided on a direction – simple as it is going to be – for it to run towards. It’s nice to get back to writing. Tonight is the Viking Night for PHYSSED (the physics social club) and Amy and Andrew are both going, so as I am poor (netbanking still hasn’t quite been perfected by both mentioned parties) and can’t afford to go, this provides me with a perfect opportunity to get some alone time and assignments/projects/writing done.

I’m A.O.K. Basically. Still stressed about uni and project. But yeah. How are you?
