Advance Australia Fair

The Saturday just gone was spent celebrating the most holy of traditional holies: sitting around drinking beer (preferably in a pool, which this year was graciously supplied by our hosts, the Jarrett family), having a barbeque, and listening to the Triple J’s Hottest 100. For those not on the big island, the Hottest 100 is an annual event whereby pretty much everyone who has a decent taste in music votes for the ten songs they think were the best for the previous year (e.g. 2007). The votes are tallied up, and the songs played for around about eight hours during the day. This year we indulged in James Squire Golden Ale, and (to the delight of myself and Louise when we saw it in the supermarket) dined on one of the Australian national emblems, the kangaroo. Kangaroo meat is a lot nicer than I thought it would be, bloody tasty if it’s marinated and cooked correctly. Oh, for those that are wondering, our nation voted the top 10 songs (fucked if I’m going to list all 100) thusly:

  1. Muse – Knights of Cydonia
  2. Silverchair – Straight Lines
  3. Kings of Leon – On Call
  4. John Butler Trio – Better Than
  5. Faker – This Heart Attack
  6. Foo Fighters – The Pretender
  7. Daft Punk – Harder Better Faster Stronger (Live)
  8. Cold War Kids – Hang Me Up To Dry
  9. Soko – I’ll Kill Her
  10. The Panics – Don’t Fight It

I’m moderately happy with the way it turned out. I’m annoyed that Daft Punk got in the top ten, given that the song is years old and the only reason it made it up there is because they did a massive sellout tour at the end of last year. Soko can also bugger off, given their novelty nature. Kings of Leon pissed me off slightly, apparently saying they didn’t want to give a quick interview because they would only have done it if they came first (which, if true, gets a big ‘get over yourself’ from me). But their live show was so fantastic that I forgive them.

So that was Aussie day for us. Sunday was spent playing Team Fortress 2 to death at a friends place, but it was a more casual LAN than some I’ve been to, and better for it. Lots of breaks, drinks, general walking around and seeing sun, rather than blinds closed hardcore death metal blasting like there has been in the past. Today was similarly relaxed; a lunch with Dad down at the Windsor followed by a siesta (I hate that I wanted to capitalise that, thank you Julian) with Louise and an afternoon consisting of playing my DS, washing our car and having a dinner of gore-met sausageinabun invaded by ants. Tomorrow brings to a close this public holiday weekend wonderland, and a return to normality and crap air-conditioning. Huzzah, I guess.
