The whole thing is a shitstorm as far as I can tell. Everyone involved is in the middle of Hurricane Denial throwing shit at each other, including the general masses.

I read reddit.com a lot and every thread regarding this issue is usually boiled down to the following debate:

Guy 1: Let's give the bailout money to the people who got bad mortgages! They get to keep their homes, the banks that aren't cooked fuckmonkeys get the money paid to them, and those established that are not corrupted stay in business. Everyone wins!

Guy 2: I paid for my mortgage and kept my house and now you're going to reward the people who were too stupid to make their payments! I am foaming at the mouth at the very idea! Here I go foaming! Good thing I'm on the internet and not on the phone or else my phone would be full of foam right now.

Guy 1: So we should bailout the banks instead? The rich fucks who have more money than sense should be bailed out instead of the people?

Guy 2: Foam foam foam.

Guy 3: You can't bail out the corporate fuckmonkeys!

Guy 1: Then we bail out the people?

Guy 3: You can't bail out the stupid fucks!

Guy 1: Then what do we do?

Guy 3: Let's throw shit at each other! Foam foam.

Guy 4: Hey let me explain exactly what's going on in a simplistic way so everyone can understanding, ultimately advising you to buy stock in gold and silver.

Meanwhile Pakistan almost lost it's entire government, China is having its first space walk (in space), Japan is calling into question the whole War Over 9/11 Thing, people are arguing over what is and is not a conspiracy theory which is a comforting thought because if there is no overarching plan behind this then what the fuck, Sarah Palin showing how much of an inadequate publicity stunt she was and how scary it is she could be a Dinner With Too Much Salt for McCain away from being President of the US, Canada is having its own government election which boils down to the Liberals saying "lol conservatives" and the conservatives saying "LOL LIBERALS". It's very easy to see why people throw themselves into a Far Left or Far Right camp with the way news is presented, and it's very difficult to see a way to not join either side and still make sense of what's going on.
