World of 100
by phill
I found this website to be incredibly striking, especially with regards to the ‘Money’, ‘Skin Colour’, and ‘Education’ panels. From the site:
“This is a self-initiated project based on the scenario – If the world were a village of 100 people. There are a few different versions of this text in circulation about the world’s statistics. I found the data very striking and neatly summarises the world that we live in. So I used information graphics to re-tell the story in another creative way. I designed a set of 20 posters, which contain most of the information. I used simple vector graphics that related to a statistic in order to present the information in the simplest and most accessible way.”
Very thought-provoking.

Interesting, and a much better visual presentation of the same data, but also complete bollocks if what I’ve heard is true. They’ve spoken about this on the radio a lot and it turns out the statistics are either fudged or entirely fabricated to begin with. These stats look a little different than the usual ones so maybe these are accurate. I will say they paint a better picture of the world than the previous ones and yeah, despite the state of the economy and wars and nuclear bombs, etc, a few of those nice things described on that site are had by over 70% of the population. Damn side better than some previous generations.
Yeah, as a research-ey person, I’d be interested to see his citations. But as a design project it’s pretty good.
Here’s one better for you. Watch these two videos in order. They’re long, but I trust you they’re worth it:

That site is fantastic by the way. I try to watch at least a few videos a week.
That’d be one weird village.
