Eurotrip: Vienna etc.

by phill

Okay so it’s been far too long since I updated this blog while on our tour of Europe. My excuses are numerous, but can be essentially distilled down to the fact that I am in goddamn Europe and therefore don’t need to be sitting at a computer terminal when there are limitless possibilities for outdoor/indoor entertainment where I am on any one particular day. Hell, I shouldn’t even be sitting here right now save for the fact that I’m so full from turkish food I can barely move, let alone hit the night life here in Vienna.

That said I did promise myself that I would make an effort to update this blog at least once, since it was pretty bloody dead before I left, so my leaving and going to Europe may have put the nail in the coffin for many people taking a squiz at it before I left. As the title says, I am currently in Vienna, which is roughly four different cities since I last updated (wait: Rome, Florence, Venice, Munich, and Vienna. Better make that five). Those foru cities have been filled beyond belief with activities but let me try and pick out some highlights in a convenient list for y’all:

  • The huge amount of ancient architecture, buildings, statues, paintings, art, writing, and history present in Rome (Roma). Also, the strange organic shapes produced by approximately five billion sparrows flitting around the tops of the domes. Oh and the chain smoking roman centurian. Oh and gelati that tasted more like whiskey than whiskey does.
  • Seeing a marathon run through the streets of Florence (Firenze) past the Duomo, eating panini out of a literal hole in the wall, seeing David up close and personal (those cheeks!), and being generously waited on by the most stereotypical waiter in probably the entirety of Italy.
  • Being in Venice (Venizia) for the first flood in 30 years and seeing St Mark’s Square flooded, seeing the ludicrously expensive coffee around the square (7.40 euro for an espresso, that’s about fifteen australian dollars folks), watching the gondolas go by and getting thoroughly lost among the streets, missing our train on the final night and having to wander around trying to find any hotel to take us through to the morning.
  • Eating the heartiest meal I’ve ever had in a beer hall in Munich (Munchen) and being seated with 5 people that we not only didn’t know, but that none of which could speak our language fluently (it was fun, honest), and then getting hideously drunk the night after with a couple of british blokes, and a black american guy that swore at himself, the bar, and everyone around him consistently for two hours. Missing Dachau because of our hangovers.
  • Eating a whole bunch of turkish here in Vienna, and getting back into the swing of museums at the museum of modern art here. Seeing a bunch of naked people on film smothering themselves in intestines.

So there you have it, my trip so far in a few easy to digest bullet points. Obviously quite a bit missing but I’ll get to that over a few beers and about 1,000 photos (so far). Now, to bed to sleep off this calf meat.
