I’m still in London, so no massive updates on the entire trip yet, but it’s New Year’s Eve and the tradition of making resolutions is one that I indulge in. A lot of people say there’s no point in making resolutions when everyone in the world knows that you never keep them, but I figure it’s a lot easier to try and keep resolutions you’ve made than ones you haven’t. So without further ado, my resolutions for 2009:

  • Keep this blog updated–obviously the trip kind of disrupted this for the latter half of the year. I was running around like a chook with its head cut off for a good deal of time before hand making sure everything was going to be okay after I left. Once I get back I want to keep it updated a bit more regularly.
  • Do something more with my domain–I’ve always wanted to have a nice little functional website and I think that my recent interest in getting a small e-zine started might help that along. I’m probably looking more towards very nicely designed, bite-sized issues than anything heavy.
  • Tone back the video games–After this trip and getting so much packed into each day, I’m looking back on the time I spend back in Perth not doing much other than playing video games and shaking my head a little. Obviously I can’t quit games cold turkey, I enjoy the challenge and the thinking involved, but maybe quitting multiplayer games would give me a way of regulating the time I spend in front of the computer screen.
  • Get more stories published–2008 gave me my first writing milestone: getting one of my stories printed in a magazine with high circulation. I want to improve on that in 2009, and I think I have the ability to do so.
  • Write a novel–I know, I know. What a ridiculous thing to put in a list of new year’s resolutions, right? It’s a hell of an undertaking, writing a novel, but I think I’m just about ready for it. Over the trip I’ve been putting together the pieces of a story I think has the ability to go the distance, and it’s just a matter of making sure I have a daily routine that will get the words down. Easier said than done, but I’m confident I can pull it off.
  • Read more–I’ve rediscovered my love of reading on the trips I’ve taken. There’s not a lot to do in airport lounges, so I bought a bunch of classics which have really inspired me to read a lot more varied sources than the same old favourites. I’m planning on working through most of the Penguin classics ranges, and then move out from there based on recommendations.
  • Move out–After moving out for almost three years I’ve been living back at home for a good year now, and although it helped me save a hell of a lot more money for the trip than I would have otherwise, it’s been a pain in the arse living so far away from everything and everyone. And no offense to Mum, but her place really is a house for her now, and I don’t really fit in there so much any more. Finding a place near to uni and friends would be a great result.

That’s about it really. I’d love to add ‘exercise more and get fit’ to that list, but I know that’s not going to happen where I am at the moment. Sitting at a computer doesn’t really engender a healthy lifestyle, but I can at least keep an eye on things and make sure I don’t balloon out of control. I’m sure Lou would say something if I did.

Anyway, I hope everyone that reads this has an excellent New Year’s celebration and makes some honest proposals to themselves. Post them in the comments if you feel like sharing, or abuse me for doing this list in the first place if tht’s your bag. Have a good one guys!
