Bookshelves
by phill

No, that's not the edge of 'twilight' you see underneath Moorcock, you're mistaken
Just a quick one to show that I’ve spent the better part of an hour reorganising my bookshelves and realising that I have quite a nice collection going. Of course, the image above doesn’t show my dedicated Neil Gaiman shelf because there’s no point rearranging that.plus it would likely have disappeard off the top of the photo.
What I did find is that the author names are highly weighted towards the start of the alphabet; lots of Bs and Cs and Ds. This is probably because some of my favourite science fiction authors from when I was right into sci-fi start with those letters (Baxter, Clarke, Card, Donaldson, etc.). The rest is fairly evenly spread around, with the notable exceptions of N (Nabokov) and Q (Queensland Writing Press) and V (Vonnegut) having only one book each. O was also exclusively owned by two Orwells.
For those that don’t follow me on the social/art site deviantART, you might like to check out an interview I had with the lovely Aditi Machado who is a literature gallery director (username: lovetodeviate) and a close friend of mine. I babble on about a few things and generally confirm everyone’s suspicion that I prefer to talk about writing rather than actually doing it.
Anyway, back to chores. I’m making a list of short-story magazine publishers that tickle my fancy from duotrope that I might share here as well.

Nice collection you’ve got. I promised Aditi that I would post a photo of my collection, and I will do that soon. Maybe you’ll see a vision of your potential future, haha.
You like Baxter? Never read him. My boyfriend is a fan and has a few of his books. I’m not really into the hard stuff, but I may read him one of these days.
If you need any suggestions on publications, I may be able to help. I’ve had a rougher time, because my work tends to be so soft–too literary for most SF journals, too SF for most literary journals–but I can tip you off on some titles.
Heh, I hope so! It was a lot easier to buy books when I worked in a bookstore, as I just picked them off as I went and then spent my paycheck at work (:
He’s good. Very depressing sometimes, as he is somewhat of a physics fatalist, but still very interesting stories.
That’d be great! I gathered about a dozen on my last waltz through duotrope but any suggestions are certainly welcome.
My original reply didn’t post for some reason…
Anyway, do you have a preference regarding market? I’ve got a mix of speculative and literary in my bookmarks. I know you’ve got a mix of both. Also, I tend to weed out non-paying markets.
don’t sort alphabetically, sort by size, largest to smallest from left of the shelf to right, with hardcovers preferably kept together. 2nd sort option is by author. If you’re totally anal, plug in cover type, size, and author, sorted in that order into Excel (or the free option of that), and your computer can tell you how to sort your books. Serendipity man, serendipity. There’s no reason for you to be creative, our robots can tell us how to best do everything already.
I ended up sorting them into wherever-I-could-find-some-space, with face preference given to books I’d read recently. It works, plus it has the advantage of having all the literary books I’ve started reading being nicely displayed. So I can wank on about them if anyone affluent ever (never) comes around. (:
