Cockatoo rising.

I got in early

to university last week, in time to see the flocks of black cockatoos entertain themselves in the campus before the students invade. It was a pretty spectacular sight–and sound, they screech like nothing else–as they wheeled around in their hundreds to clutch at any worthwhile perch near the chemistry building.

What made it a more amusing sight was the way that a few cockatoos were trying to roost on the top of the giant exhaust pipe that juts out from the top of the building. This exhaust pipe emits air from all the air-conditioning and fume hoods in the building, so whenever the cockatoos got anywhere near close to landing on the rim, they were shot several feet in the air in a flurry of wings, desperately trying to stabilise themselves.

I’m going to go in tomorrow and see if I can’t get a snap of the rapid movement, it’d make a pretty good photo I think.
