Official meetings really

aren’t the way to go if you ask me. I may be biased, given the two I’ve had in the last two days, but I think I’ve got enough hand-waving theory to back me up here. For one, everyone knows that the real reason for having an official meeting of like-minded or like-purposed individuals is to network. So why not dispense with the overly pretentious PowerPoint presentations in favour of a few more minutes of coffee and biscuits? Of course, you still need to find out what everyone’s doing, but I’m pretty sure that the subject would come up in conversation. It’s fact that every time I’ve ever met someone, the first question asked is ‘So, what do you do?’. If I’m catching up with someone I haven’t seen for a while it’s usually ‘So, what are you up to nowadays?’. And I’m happy to answer! People love talking about themselves, you don’t need a projector and a faulty laser pointer to lead the way. Let us talk, not lecture each other.

Now a tangent: what I would really love to ask someone upon first meeting them is ‘So, what do you want to be doing?’. Of course, they’d likely assume I’m either a wanker or an optimist (I’m not sure which would rankle more). Perhaps I’ll give it a try when I next meet someone with the countenance to take it well.

As an Australian (and one that looks down on our cousins with a haughty look after our thrilling 1-run win over them in the twenty20 match last weekend) I heartily encourage anyone concerned with keeping the internet free to head to this website and learn how to black out their various social sites in protest of a really stupid law that is soon to be passed in New Zealand. (via being intrigued at why a few friends turned black on Twitter this afternoon)

I’m a pretty big fan of manipulating modern data methods to create art, so Chris Davenport’s Data Shuffle really intrigued me. (via PICDIT)

An absolutely gorgeous (and sometimes somewhat abstract) Photographic Dictionary. I filled with a good few ideas for stories while I was flicking through this. Highly recommended for people suffering creative blocks. (via Dinosaurs and Robots)
