A Vintage answer.

The twitter account
of Vintage Books recently asked for submissions of questions from users to their editing team. I duly submitted my question, “How seriously do you take unsolicited/agent-less submissions?” and forgot about it. Yesterday they started answering the questions and lo and behold, my question was first up. If it weren’t honest I’d not repost, but it was. So for your reading pleasure and information, here’s the answer:
“Everything we receive is read, but the slush pile is read by our assistants, who have to fit it around all their other work.
If it is good, it’ll be passed onto someone more senior to look at, but they’ll also be looking at books from agents, which take priority.
Oh, and make sure you send it to the right company! If we don’t publish yoga books, it won’t matter how good your book is, we can’t do it.”
So there you go. Everything gets read, just some more read than others. :)

Sweet I guess. I admit I fancy something of mine wrapped up and on the shelf in that Vintage International book design/layout.
I wonder how you can get a job as one of those underlings… :\
@Lane Yeah, I do love their designs, they’ve usually got some of the best covers.
@Corsair Luckily, I believe. :*(
