Mobility

Louise has finally
bought herself a car. The accident that Louise and I were in was way back in August (13th to be exact. See? There’s a use for maintaining a journal after all) so it’s taken her some time to get up the funds and to find the right car for her. Nevertheless, today we went and picked up her brand new blue Toyota Corolla named Cornelius, Corey, or Lola; she’s not sure yet. This is such a boost for her. It’s been about four months since she graduated and while the job market is starting to pick up, it’s created a bit of a catch-22 in the architecture business. The government has been spending left, right, and centre on infrastructure in order to give the economy a boost, but this has meant that architecture groups are keen for people that can do things quickly and without much guidance — in other words, people with at least five years experience. This does not a graduate student equal. So being without a car and without a job (other than Baskin Robbins) was a pretty big downer, as you might imagine. It got me thinking that my ability to get in a car and drive somewhere completely different is something that I not only take for granted, but also don’t take advantage of nearly enough. I had the same thoughts when Debbi, Paul, Dino and I went to Lancelin for the weekend; ‘Why don’t I do this more often?‘ It’s very easy to get stuck in the alternate locations that are at our fingertips, rather than our (metaphorical) feet.
But with this newly purchased mobility, I think things are looking up. She can get to the gym now, run around town handing in resumes, and generally not be confined to the muggy interior of our unit. We sat down last night over dinner and had a pretty good talk about all the different projects she could take up, and she seemed pretty keen to do some illustrations for various things. There’s even talk of trying to get some of the arty folk at the ice-cream shop to start a collective selling effort. Amazing how some positive thinking and pork cutlets can make all the difference.
In other news I’ve been writing a little, dabbling in a collaborative effort with a pretty talented guy over East. I’ve also been working on an idea that I believe has the potential to be a long story. Whether I ever get past the planning stage is another matter entirely.
