It’s really hot.
Not here. Here the air-conditioning still rolls through our room like waves at a beach (seriously, I’d record it for you but I’m too lazy with lull). But at home there’s nothing like that. The house is shut up all day, collecting energy within itself like a screaming Dragonball character, waiting to unleash the gasp and sweat upon any who dare open its doors. It makes coming home something to be avoided at all costs. What a horrible concept.
Our trip to Peppermint Grove Beach, only a couple of hours outside of Perth, was a resounding success. I’d have loved to stay for a few more days, but unfortunately I needed to get back in order to leave again. This time for a trip to get some help with the data I’ve been collecting for the past few years. The trip itself was filled with small successes, mainly confirmations that what I’ve been doing is approximately right, plus a lot of new skills to apply and nuances to grasp.
I’m thinking about applying for an extension. Well, lessĀ ‘thinking about’ and more ‘definitely going to’. There’s enough money in my funds pool left to pay me for an extra few months, and as one of my supervisors said, if I finish early I can always use the extra few months to wring a couple of papers out of my work. Win/win.
I’ve started keeping track of what I read on a new page called ‘Reading‘ (you can click there or up the top on any page). Last year I read a lot of books, but found myself struggling to remember them when it came to writing an annual round up. I’ll be reviewing/commenting on things as soon as I finish reading them (or as soon as I can, if I’m somewhere without the ‘net), and posting monthly aggregates of that list in order to populate my ‘Review’ category which is currently nearly skeletal with underfeeding.
I have a new sci-fi flash fiction coming up at the good people of 365tomorrows, so I’ll link you to that when it happens. I’ve also submitted a short story to a local magazine, but no word on acceptance or rejection yet. I’ve been writing a lot more than usual, and thinking about writing a lot, which is nice. Unfortunately it’s time to knuckle down and crank this thesis out, which will mean a great deal fewer posts and stories. I’ll try and keep Charley Mitchell going, but it’s anyone’s guess what the update schedule will be. Certainly not the cheerful ‘next Friday!’ that I continually delude myself into posting at the bottom of each. Wish me luck. (:
